Opening a relationship can feel exciting, expansive and deeply honest. It can also awaken fears you did not expect—of being replaced, left behind, controlled or no longer feeling special.

Whether you are considering opening a long-term relationship, already practising polyamory or ethical non-monogamy, or repairing trust after a broken agreement, therapy helps you move from assumptions to shared meaning.

Why People Come to Open Relationship Therapy

〜

We opened too fast.

The relationship changed before trust, boundaries and emotional safety had time to catch up.

We want different things.

One person wants more freedom. The other wants more reassurance, structure or time.

We lost each other in the rules.

Agreements became confusing, jealousy grew or a crossed boundary damaged trust.

Writing a New Relationship Script

〜

Non-monogamy is not the absence of rules. It is the chance to choose them consciously.

The traditional script gave you ready-made answers about commitment, fidelity, partnership and what it means to choose someone.

You may have stepped outside that script because it felt too narrow, too automatic or simply not true for you. But freedom does not arrive with instructions.

You need more than rules about sex, dates and disclosure. You need a shared language for the relationship underneath them.

  • What helps each person still feel chosen and important?
  • What belongs uniquely to this relationship?
  • How much information feels connecting—and how much feels invasive?
  • How do we make space for desire without abandoning attachment?
  • What happens when an agreement no longer works?
  • How do we repair hurt without shutting down the whole conversation?

A strong new script makes room for freedom, attachment, honesty and an honest no.

How Open Relationship Therapy Helps

〜

I won’t choose the model for you. I’ll help you build the relationship underneath it.

Using Relational Life Therapy, Emotionally Focused Therapy and Systemic Therapy, we work with attachment, trust, consent, power and the patterns underneath jealousy, conflict and withdrawal.

Together, we can:

  • Explore why opening the relationship matters now.
  • Understand whether it is a shared desire, a reluctant compromise or an ultimatum.
  • Slow down when partners are moving at different emotional speeds.
  • Work with jealousy, comparison, fear of replacement and new relationship energy.
  • Create clear agreements around time, sex, disclosure, privacy, safer sex and emotional responsibility.
  • Make space for existing partners, new partners and changing needs.
  • Repair secrecy, infidelity, crossed boundaries or broken agreements.
  • Decide whether to open, pause, close or redesign the relationship.

Open Relationships, Polyamory & ENM · Common Questions

〜
Should we come to therapy before opening our relationship?

Yes, therapy can be useful before any decisions are made. It gives you space to explore motivations, fears, boundaries and what opening the relationship would mean to each of you.

One of us wants non-monogamy more than the other. Can therapy help?

Yes. Therapy will not pressure either person to agree. We explore what each person genuinely wants, what each person fears and whether a mutually chosen path is possible.

We are already polyamorous or practising ENM. Is this therapy still relevant?

Yes. You do not need an introduction to non-monogamy. Therapy can focus directly on your relationship dynamics, agreements, jealousy, attachment needs, communication and repair.

Can therapy help after secrecy or a broken agreement?

Yes. Broken agreements can damage trust regardless of the relationship structure. Therapy helps you understand what happened, take responsibility and decide whether trust can be rebuilt.

Will you push us toward monogamy or non-monogamy?

No. I do not promote one relationship model. The focus is whether your choices are honest, consensual, mutual and sustainable for the people living inside the relationship.

The point is not to escape every rule.

It is to create a relationship you can both live inside.
