English-Speaking Therapy for Expat & International Couples

〜

You’re not just building a relationship. You’re trying to merge two worlds.

Different countries. Different families. Different languages. Different histories. Different invisible rules about how love should work.

What looks like a communication problem is often something deeper: two people protecting what feels normal, loyal or safe in the worlds they came from.

The problem isn’t that you’re different. It’s what those differences begin to mean.

What’s Really Happening

〜

The argument may be happening today. But the rules were written long before you met.

One of you experiences directness as honesty.

The other hears aggression.

One believes family should always come first.

The other experiences that closeness as intrusion.

One reaches for connection.

The other needs distance to feel safe.

Neither blueprint is neutral. Both made sense in the worlds you came from. But when you treat your blueprint as the truth, difference quickly becomes evidence: You don’t care. You’re too controlling. You’re selfish. Your family matters more than I do. You are no longer responding only to each other. You are defending two inherited versions of how a relationship should work.

When Two Worlds Collide

〜

Family loyalty

What feels like care to one partner can feel like control to the other. The real question becomes: who gets a voice in the life you are building now?

Conflict

One reaches harder for connection. The other creates more distance. Both try to feel safer, and leave each other feeling less safe.

Identity

Moving countries can change your confidence, independence, career, social position and sense of self. The relationship may carry more of that weight than either of you realises.

Belonging

Many international couples quietly live with the question: Where is home, and whose losses made this life possible?

How I Work

〜

We don’t just improve communication. We uncover the system underneath it.

Using Relational Life Therapy, Emotionally Focused Therapy and Systemic Therapy, we make the invisible rules visible: the family loyalties, cultural messages, power differences and protective strategies organising your relationship.

My approach is direct, active and built for change. We identify what each of you does when you feel hurt, where those protective strategies came from and what you must learn to do differently now.

  • Understand the blueprints you inherited and what they are costing you now.
  • Separate genuine cultural difference from avoidance, disrespect or unequal power.
  • Stop using history or culture to excuse behaviour that harms the relationship.
  • Learn how to tell the truth without attacking, listen without defending and set boundaries without disconnecting.
  • Create shared agreements that belong to your relationship, not automatically to either family.

The goal is not to decide whose culture is right. It is to build a third culture together.

One that honours both histories without being ruled by either.

One where both partners have a voice.

One designed consciously, not inherited by default.

Your history explains the pattern. It does not excuse its impact.

The goal isn’t to become the same.

It’s to build something that couldn’t exist without both of you.
